I hope John Kanzius’ new idea for cancer treatment works and wins him a Nobel Prize. He has no college degree and has been building radio frequency transmitters since he was a kid. The treatment using radio waves won’t go to clinical trials for another two or three years, but basically, the concept is that gold nanoparticles or carbon nanotubes will be injected into cancer patients. These nanoparticles will have targeting molecules that attach it to receptors on the cancer cells. The development of the targeting molecules will be the tricky part. Radio waves will heat up these nanoparticles attached to the cancer cells, thus destroying the cancer cells without killing healthy cells. (The loss of healthy cells is what causes the toxic side effects of modern cancer therapies.) John Kanzius has cancer himself. He volunteered to be the first human to try his new invention. Good stuff.
